"Brain cancer needs all the support it can get - because everyone deserves more time.”
Tyra Eberwein
Tyra is raising money for brain cancer research - because everyone deserves more time.
When Tyra’s father, Willy Eberwein, was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer in late 2022, it came as a shock.
Living alone in Beijing, the early signs - forgetfulness and behavioural changes - went unnoticed until he failed to show up for work. Concerned colleagues took him to the hospital, where scans revealed two large tumours.
At just 23, Tyra was the only family member granted a visa to enter China. She travelled alone to care for her father during his surgery and chemotherapy. “It was really hard, but I cherished that time,” she says. “We cooked together, watched movies, just spent slow days together.”
In a special moment, Tyra asked her father to shave her head after his hair began falling out from treatment. “I thought, this might be the last fun thing we do together,” she recalls.
After returning to Australia, Tyra remained in close contact with her father until his passing ten months later. To honour his memory, she is running the Noosa Half Marathon to raise funds for Brain Cancer Australia.
“You never think brain cancer will happen to you,” Tyra says. “It reminded me how fragile life is.”
As part of Brain Cancer Awareness Month this May, Brain Cancer Australia is highlighting the fundraisers, families, clinicians and researchers - like Tyra - working together to drive faster breakthroughs
