Brain Cancer Australia’s Founding Director, Robyn Leonard OAM, has been featured by She Gives as part of their 100 Stories of Giving series.
She Gives is a platform that shares stories of Australian women making a difference through philanthropy, leadership and impact.
In her interview, Robyn speaks about the loss of her daughter Lucie to brain cancer and how that experience led her to take action. She shares the simple but powerful idea that helped spark national collaboration: asking biobanks across Australia to open their fridges and share samples to support brain cancer research.
That idea became the foundation for Brain Cancer Australia’s work — bringing together over 90 leading researchers and clinicians to build the infrastructure needed to accelerate brain cancer breakthroughs.
Robyn also reflects on how giving has always been part of her life. Her mother was a WWII army nurse turned maternity matron, and that spirit of generosity shaped Robyn’s own values from an early age.
As Robyn says in the piece: “If you have a simple idea and follow it through, it can be transformational. Even if you're not an expert and the odds feel impossible, persistence makes things possible.”
