"We've had great teachers that taught us critical thinking, critical reasoning, but also ethical decision making, with empathy and compassion for our patients."
Professor Michael Besser AM
Professor Michael Besser honoured with AMA Medal.
Brain Cancer Australia congratulates our Chair, Professor Michael Besser AM, on being awarded the Australian Medical Association Medal in recognition of 50 years of service to medicine.
Professor Besser was one of 137 members of the Australian Medical Association (NSW) celebrated at a special lunch at NSW Parliament House.
Since joining the AMA in 1975, he has witnessed and contributed to an era of extraordinary change in medicine. During his keynote address, Professor Besser reflected:
“We have lived and worked in a golden age of medicine, and we had great teachers that taught us critical thinking, critical reasoning, but also ethical decision making, with empathy and compassion for our patients.”
Over his long career as a neurosurgeon, Professor Besser has cared for thousands of patients and taught generations of medical students.
One of those patients was Lucie Leonard, daughter of our founder Robyn Leonard OAM. Deeply moved by Lucie’s grace in the face of her brain cancer battle, and inspired by Robyn’s determination to tackle nationwide gaps in brain cancer research infrastructure, Professor Besser joined Brain Cancer Australia in 2015.
As an organisation, we are privileged to benefit from his wisdom, experience and commitment to improving the lives of people impacted by brain cancer.
