“It’s about helping push research forward so that one day fewer families have to go through this.”
Nathan Cosgrove
Tomorrow night at 6.30pm, Nathan Cosgrove will lace up his joggers and set off on his 31st and final 10km run as part of a May challenge to raise awareness and funds for Brain Cancer Australia.
Nathan was inspired to undertake his ‘10KM a day for the month of May to raise $10K’ challenge after his mate, Blake Davenport, was diagnosed with brain cancer.
“Being diagnosed with brain cancer at just 21 is something no one should have to face,” Nathan says. “Blake went to high school with me, and through mutual friends and the local community, his journey has had a real impact on a lot of people, including myself.”
Each evening, Nathan has run from Rofe Park in Hornsby to Crosslands Gate in Hornsby Heights and back — committing to the challenge every day, regardless of weather or fatigue.
“Taking on this challenge is my way of showing support, raising awareness, and trying to help raise money for research,” he says. “If this challenge can help raise awareness and contribute even in a small way to funding research, then it’s worth every step.”
Nathan says he’s been amazed by the support - both from donations and the people and pets from the community who have joined him for some of the runs.
“It’s great to see a strong community presence. I’m blown away by the fact I hit the $10K target at the halfway mark and have now raised over $15,000. I’m very grateful to everyone who has contributed,” says Nathan.
Brain cancer remains one of the most underfunded and under-researched cancers in Australia, with patients and families often facing devastating outcomes.
“It’s about supporting families like the Davenports and helping push research forward so that one day fewer families have to go through this,” Nathan says.
Funds raised through Nathan’s challenge will support Brain Cancer Australia’s work building the national infrastructure needed to accelerate breakthroughs in brain cancer research and improve outcomes for patients and families.
We are so grateful for Nathan’s incredible efforts - and the community that has got behind him and Blake.
